The San Diego Padres committed to buying on Tuesday afternoon, acquiring veteran left-handed pitcher Rich Hill and first baseman Ji-Man Choi from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Padres are sending minor-league prospects to the Pirates in the deal. Left-handed starter Jackson Wolf, first baseman Alfonso Rivas and outfielder Estuar Suero are the return.
Hill, 43, will join his 13th MLB franchise in his 19th season. He has a 4.76 ERA with Pittsburgh this season over 119 innings of work. He joined the Pirates on a one-year, $8 million deal this past off-season.
Choi, 32, also has just one year remaining on his contract after being traded to Pittsburgh by the Tampa Bay Rays in November.
In 23 games this season, he is hitting .205 with six home runs and 11 RBI.
San Diego had been a team to watch for which course they decided to take at the trade deadline. It was connected to New York Mets starter Justin Verlander earlier in the day, indicating its intention to contend for a spot in the post-season.
The Padres are five games out of the final wild-card spot, with a 52-55 record.
