The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly reached a deal with Kyle Schwarber, according to multiple reports, removing another coveted player from free agency as the league's frenetic post-lockout rush continues.
Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports the contract is for four years and worth just under $20 million per season.
Several teams were believed to be in the running for Schwarber, including the Toronto Blue Jays, though as Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reported earlier today, pessimism had grown that the team and him would reach a deal.
Schwarber, who won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, just turned 29 and is fresh off a career-best season split between the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox.
Across 303 plate appearances with Washington, he hit .253/.340/.570 with 25 home runs, including a scorching June in which he hit 16 home runs before suffering a hamstring injury in early July.
Despite the injury, Boston acquired Schwarber in a deadline deal. He returned to action in mid-July and continued his torrid pre-injury pace, hitting seven home runs with a .291/.435/.522 line in 41 games as a member of the Red Sox.
