The New York Yankees would like to bring back star second baseman DJ LeMahieu, but a large gap reportedly still exists between the two sides in contract talks.
According to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, who was first to report the contract stalemate, "there isn’t much reason to believe the sides will come to an agreement in the immediate future."
LeMahieu, 32, finished third in American League MVP voting after leading the league in batting average (.364) and on-base percentage (.421) with 10 home runs. The Toronto Blue Jays have been attached to LeMahieu in multiple reports this off-season, although it's believed he's more likely to stay in the New York area.
To that end, ESPN's Jeff Passan added to Kuty's report Monday morning, writing on Twitter that "There's no rush for him to sign. If he gets to the point that the Yankees have aggrieved him enough with their initial offer to strongly consider others, they will be there -- and not just one or two. But belief is Yankees still gonna step up."
