The Chicago White Sox and shortstop Paul DeJong are in agreement on a one-year contract, according to multiple sources.
DeJong, a veteran of seven MLB seasons, spent 2023 split between the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants.
In 112 games, he slashed .207/.258/.355 with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs.
The 30-year-old was dealt from St. Louis to Toronto at the trade deadline, and proceeded to pick up just three hits in 44 at-bats while striking out 18 times before being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays.
He then signed with the Giants, where he didn't fare all that much better, registering nine hits in 49 at-bats before being released.
In his MLB career, DeJong has made one All-Star appearance — representing the Cardinals at the Midsummer Classic in 2019 — and hit .229 with 116 home runs in 729 games.
The White Sox were in the market for a shortstop after choosing not to exercise their team option on two-time All-Star and former batting champion Tim Anderson.
DeJong has been one the premier defenders at short since his debut in 2017, ranking fifth among all players to log more than 5000 innings at the position in defensive runs saves with 41.
The deal is pending a physical, which is reportedly scheduled for Monday.
