While Ricky Tiedemann's 2024 regular season debut didn't start the way he had hoped, the Toronto Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect settled down over the rest of his outing on Friday.
After allowing a lead-off home run to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders centre fielder Greg Allen, Tiedemann finished his outing after working 2.2 innings, allowing just the one run with three hits, two walks and three strikeouts for the Buffalo Bisons.
Tiedemann exited the game in the third inning after throwing 65 pitches, 44 of them for strikes, generating 10 whiffs on 32 swings and seeing his fastball hit 97.4 mph on a frigid day for baseball in Buffalo.
Andrew Bash entered the game in relief and stranded the bases loaded in the third.
Per Baseball Savant, Tiedemann mixed in three pitches, his four-seam fastball, a sweeper and a changeup.
Facing the New York Yankees' triple-A affiliate, Tiedemann got Everson Pereira, Jose Rojas and former Toronto first-round pick Jordan Groshans to strike out.
Tiedemann is ranked as the No. 29 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline and No. 22 by Baseball America.
In 2023, Tiedemann threw 62 innings across three minor-league levels and the Arizona Fall League (AFL). He finished the MiLB season with a 3.68 ERA, 82 strikeouts and 23 walks.
At the AFL, he was named the Pitcher of the Year, allowing just five runs over 18 innings of work while racking up 23 strikeouts.
The Bisons were up 5-1 when Tiedemann left after scoring five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Spencer Horwitz after a nine-pitch at-bat.
Paolo Espino is scheduled to start Game 2 of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT.
