The Kansas City Royals are adding some depth to their pitching staff.
Kansas City announced Monday that it has acquired right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen from the Texas Rangers in exchange for triple-A left-hander Walter Pennington.
Lorenzen, 32, signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with Texas this past off-season. In 101.2 innings with the Rangers this year, he owns a 3.81 ERA over 19 appearances with 75 strikeouts and 48 walks.
His last start came on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, in which he had to leave after allowing four runs before escaping the first inning. He was able to bounce back and make his first relief appearance of the season on Sunday.
Pennington, 26, made his MLB debut earlier in July, pitching two-thirds of an inning for the Royals.
Most of his season has been spent in the bullpen at triple-A, where he has a 2.26 ERA and 79 strikeouts over 59.2 innings.
