Davis Schneider could not have asked for a better start to his MLB career.
With a single in the ninth inning against Boston on Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays rookie became the first player in MLB history to collect nine hits and two homers in his first three games.
The nine hits matched a modern MLB record that dated back to 1901. The only other major-leaguer to do so was Coaker Triplett of the Chicago Cubs, who did it in April of 1938 against the Cincinnati Reds. Triplett had two doubles and a triple, but no home runs.
The 24-year-old also elevated the franchise rookie record in the process, having already set one with a home run over the Green Monster in the fourth inning for his seventh hit and then another with a single in the seventh for his eighth.
Schneider was already the fifth player in Blue Jays history to have multiple hits in back-to-back games to begin his MLB career — and the first since Aaron Hill in 2005.
Schneider was moved up to third in the batting order Sunday and got his third start at second base in the series finale against the Red Sox. He opened the game with a single before hitting his homer in the fourth inning. He struck out and was hit by a pitch in his other at-bats.
He wasted no time making use of his first MLB at-bat on Friday night, hitting a homer run off Canadian-born Red Sox lefty James Paxton.
A 28th-round pick in 2017 by Toronto, Schneider said Friday he contemplated quitting baseball just two years ago when he was struggling with single-A Vancouver.
But he has elevated his game in a big way this year. The Blue Jays' 28th-ranked prospect got the callup Friday after hitting a team-leading 21 home runs with triple-A Buffalo.
