The New York Mets have had another rocky start to this 2024 campaign. With a record that currently shows six games below .500, they are actually on a three game winning streak, and some fans are looking to a non-player for their contributions, the McDonald's mascot Grimace.
On Wednesday, before a game between the Miami Marlins and the New York Mets at Citi Field, the (roughly) 6'5", purple-fuzzy mascot took to the mound to throw out the games' first pitch. Following a 2-1 win against San Diego on Friday, the home side hasn't lost yet.
For Grimace, it looks like he's seeking redemption after taking Tik Tok by storm with his 'Grimace-Shake' that went viral in the summer of last year. And helping out a struggling Mets team would be a good place to start.
Expectations for the Metropolitans have been high coming into their last two Opening Day's, following a 100-win season in 2022. Now, in 2024, the Mets do rank first in a couple of categories, they have the highest payroll, with over $300 million on the books, along with holding the top spot in the league for average-age for players on their roster.
There is plenty of baseball left to be played this year, and if it weren't for their month of May, where they went an abysmal 9-19, they would be above that .500 mark. However, 'would's' and 'maybe's' don't amount to pennants in this league so, going forward, the team may look to keep Grimace on standby, if things start going south once again.
