The New York Yankees continue to be one of baseball's busiest teams this off-season.
Late Friday night the Yankees traded catcher Jose Trevino to the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson.
Trevino, 32, has spent the past three seasons in the Bronx. He was an All-Star in 2022 and earned the American League catcher Gold Glove and the league's Platinum Glove for his work behind the plate.
Offensively, he has taken steps back from his All-Star campaign. In 2024, he slashed .215/.288/.354 with eight home runs in 73 games.
Trevino is projected to make $3.4 million in arbitration — his final year of team control before hitting the free-agent market next winter.
With Austin Wells emerging as a Rookie of the Year finalist this summer, New York seems set with the 25-year-old as its catcher of the future.
Cruz, 34, made his MLB debut with the Reds in 2022 and has pitched out of their bullpen over the last two seasons. The six-foot-two righty pitched to a 4.86 ERA in 66.2 innings in 2025, racking up 109 strikeouts.
Jackson, who turns 29 on Dec. 25, has struggled to find his footing in the big leagues since debuting in 2019. He has spent time with four different franchises as a major leaguer.
Jackson signed with the Reds as a free agent on Nov. 8 after slashing .122/.201/.237 with three homers in 58 games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2024.
The Reds also have Tyler Stephenson at catcher. The 28-year-old Stephenson is coming off a breakout season, batting .258 with 19 homers and 66 RBIs.
