Blue Jays’ Berrios, Chapman, Kiermaier win Gold Glove Awards

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios, third baseman Matt Chapman and outfielder Kevin Kiermaier won Gold Glove Awards on Sunday as the best defenders in their position.

This is Berrios’ first Gold Glove Award. He registered a 3.65 ERA across 189.2 innings and tied a career-high 32 starts. He was the subject of controversy after being pulled for Yusei Kikuchi in Game 2 of the Wild-Card series despite pitching three scoreless innings in the must-win contest.

He was second in the AL in defensive runs saved among pitchers with six, had a .953 fielding percentage and led the field in assists on put-outs.

This is Chapman’s fourth Gold Glove, winning the award in 2018, 2019 and 2021 with the Oakland Athletics. He lapped the field in defensive runs saved among third basemen in the AL, putting up 12 while second place was Texas’ Josh Smith with six.

This is also Kiermaier’s fourth Gold Glove and his first since 2019, winning all with the Tampa Bay Rays. He was just what the Blue Jays wanted in the outfield after joining as a free agent ahead of the season, finishing with 18 defensive runs saved, tying teammate Daulton Varson for the top spot in the AL among centre fielders.

In the National League, Arizona Diamondbacks and former Blue Jays catcher Gabriel Moreno also took home a Gold Glove award, the first of his young career. He led MLB in defensive WAR according to baseball reference.
