Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter/first baseman Brandon Belt will miss his second game in a row on Monday against the Oakland Athletics while he battles a stomach virus, manager John Schneider said.
Belt was a late scratch for Sunday’s game versus Colorado because of lower-back tightness.
Belt, who was being kept away from the team Monday, also sat out for two games last week with a back issue.
The 35-year-old Belt has been one of Toronto’s better hitters after a rough start to his time in Toronto in April.
Belt is slashing .252/.371/.473, with 16 homers and 38 RBIs.
Recent call-up Spencer Horwitz, who replaced Belt on Sunday and hit his first MLB home run, is back at first base with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. the designated hitter.
Ernie Clement plays shortstop, Cavan Biggio plays third base and Davis Schneider gets a day off.
Meanwhile, Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen (finger fracture) will see a hand specialist in Pennsylvania on Wednesday to help determine next steps.
Reliever Erik Swanson (back) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday in Toronto.
