Toronto Blue Jays reliever Chad Green has hit a setback in his return.
The right-hander has entered concussion protocol following a scary moment in a rehab appearance on Tuesday with triple-A Buffalo, the Blue Jays told reporters Wednesday.
Green needs to be cleared by the Blue Jays, MLB and MLBPA physicians before he returns.
The incident occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning when catcher Tyler Heineman attempted to catch Worcester’s Ryan Fitzgerald stealing second base and clipped Green on the head.
The former New York Yankee was taken out of the game as a precaution. Green ended up pitching 0.2 innings in his sixth rehab appearance of the summer.
Green underwent Tommy John surgery in June of 2022. The 31-year-old spent the previous seven seasons with the New York Yankees, having his best year in 2017 when he posted a 1.83 ERA and allowed just four home runs over 69.0 innings.
Green signed a two-year contract worth $8.5 million with the Blue Jays in January 2023,
