Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman discusses receiving AL Player of the Month honours for April, saying he is gratified to be able to help his team win games.

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman has been named the American League Player of the Month for April.

Chapman has gotten off to a torrid start in 2023, leading the AL in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and doubles.

The 30-year-old slashed .384/.465/.687 in the opening month with 15 doubles and five home runs while posting a 1.152 OPS. He also added 21 RBI, 14 walks and 17 runs scored to his early season totals.

Chapman has ripped the cover off the baseball so far this season, helping him to his early season surge. He led the league in hard hit percentage and barrel percentage in April.

His 15 doubles and 20-extra-base hits were the most ever by a Blue Jay through the first month.

On the National League side, Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was named the Player of the Month after slashing .352/.440/.546 with nine doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI and 13 stolen bases.

MLB also handed out its Pitchers of the Month Wednesday, with New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole taking home the AL honours and Los Angeles Dodgers southpaw Clayton Kershaw the award in the NL for the seventh time in his career.

Dodgers outfielder James Outman and Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung were named the Rookies of the Month in their respective leagues. Baltimore Orioles righty Felix Bautista and San Diego Padres closer Josh Hader rounded out the list of players recognized for their strong starts, winning the AL and NL Relievers of the Month.
