The Toronto Blue Jays are doing what they can to improve their bullpen amidst recent struggles from the relief unit.
Toronto claimed righty Brett de Geus off waivers from the Miami Marlins and, in a corresponding move, has designated fellow righty Yerry Rodriguez for assignment, the team announced on Thursday.
De Geus was designated for assignment for the Marlins on Tuesday after struggling to a 6.35 ERA with the team this season. He started the year with the Seattle Mariners, where he had a 2.70 ERA in 3.1 innings of work from the bullpen.
Overall, the 26-year-old has a career 7.17 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 59.0 innings pitched over 58 appearances at the major league level.
The Blue Jays optioned the Pleasanton, Calif., native to triple-A Buffalo.
Rodriguez, 26, was traded to the Blue Jays from the Texas Rangers in June for minor-league righty Josh Mollerus. In 4.2 innings of work with the Blue Jays this season, he has a 15.43 ERA and five strikeouts.
