Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano has begun a throwing progression at the team’s training complex in Dunedin, Fla., according to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling.
Romano has been throwing on flat ground out to 60 feet. Toronto also says that there isn’t a timetable for Romano to get back on a mound.
The 31-year-old had surgery to repair an impingement in his right elbow on July 3. The Blue Jays intended to have him back with the club before the end of the season.
As Zwelling notes, the Blue Jays only have 22 games remaining on their schedule, so Romano has limited time to get in shape to pitch.
Romano had a difficult beginning to his season, starting the year on the injured list after receiving an anti-inflammatory injection in spring training. He returned on April 16 but went back on the IL before getting another injection and undergoing the surgery.
The Markham, Ont. native struggled to a 6.59 ERA over 13.2 innings when he managed to take the mound for Toronto. He picked up eight saves but couldn’t keep the ball in the yard, allowing four home runs.
