Blue Jays’ Jansen, Swanson and Romano make rehab appearances with triple-A Buffalo

Three Blue Jays regulars made rehab appearances with triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Thursday as they took on the Rochester Red Wings.

Righty reliever Erik Swanson went up against four batters in the outing. He got the ball in the fifth inning, giving up a run on a pair of singles and induced a pair of groundouts. Twelve of his 17 pitches went for strikes.

Swanson, out with forearm tightness since mid-March, previously made one appearance, on Sunday at single-A Dunedin.

He was replaced by Hayden Juenger after allowing the second single.

Closer Jordan Romano, meanwhile, got the ball in the top of the seventh inning. The first batter he faced flew out, but Romano would struggle after that, issuing a single and two walks before being pulled for Hagen Danner, who ended the inning with a double play. Romano also had a balk in his appearance. His day ended having thrown 18 pitches, six of them in the strike zone.

Romano has been sidelined since late March after dealing with right elbow inflammation in spring training.

On the other side of the ball, catcher Danny Jansen had a solid day at the plate in his second rehab start. He hit a two-run double in the bottom of the second to give the Bisons an early lead.

This was Jansen’s second start with Buffalo and his first behind the plate. He suited up in Wednesday’s game as a DH, hitting a grand slam in the win over the Red Wings.

Jansen has been out since mid-March with a fractured wrist after being hit by a pitch during spring training.

The game ended in a 6-3 loss, cut short at eight innings due to weather. It saw Ricky Tiedemann get the start for the Bisons, with the Jays’ top prospect giving up three hits and two runs over 3.2 innings of work. The 21-year-old threw 73 pitches, 42 of them for strikes, while walking three and striking out seven batters.
