Blue Jays’ Guerrero Jr. second among AL first basemen in All-Star vote update

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remains a finalist among American League first basemen in fan voting for the All-Star Game.

MLB released the latest numbers Monday with Guerrero Jr. (1,338,688) now in second and trailing Baltimore Orioles’ Ryan Mountcastle (1,400,373) by 61,685 votes.

Guerrero Jr. was ahead of Mountcastle during MLB’s voting update last week.

The top two players at their position — or top six among outfielders — will advance to the next round of voting when Phase 1 closes at 12 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Guerrero Jr. has a cushion of 546,334 votes over Cleveland Guardians’ Josh Naylor, who is third among AL first basemen with 792,354 votes.

Now sporting a short haircut to celebrate five years in the majors, Guerrero Jr. leads all qualified American League first basemen with a .279 batting average and is tied for fourth with nine home runs.

The 25-year-old is looking to compete in his fourth consecutive All-Star Game. He was voted to the mid-summer classic in 2021 where he became the youngest player to earn the All-Star Game’s MVP award.

Guerrero Jr. is the only Blue Jays player currently in a finalist spot, however, several of his teammates are in the running at their respective positions:

C: Danny Jansen, fourth (366,294)
2B: Davis Schneider, sixth (422,718)
3B: Isiah Kiner-Falefa, fifth (355,969)
SS: Bo Bichette, fifth (400,378)
DH: Justin Turner, sixth (359,658)
OF: Daulton Varsho, 12th (374,936)
OF: George Springer, 15th (335,600)
OF: Kevin Kiermaier, 17th (324,520)

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge leads all players with 2,375,199 votes.

Phase 2 is a head-to-head competition between the finalists at each position, beginning on Sunday and concluding on July 3 before the starters are revealed later that day.

All-Star pitchers and reserves will be announced on July 7 and will be chosen through a combination of player ballots and selections made by the Commissioner’s Office.

The All-Star Game is July 16 in Arlington, Texas.
