Blue Jays’ Ryu gives up one run in three innings in first rehab appearance

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Hyun Jin Ryu gave up one run in three innings on Tuesday in Florida Complex League action in his first rehab appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June.

Ryu gave up four hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter against a Detroit Tigers affiliate in Dunedin, Fla.

An exact timeline is difficult to map out, but a 12-month recovery from the surgery is considered best-case scenario, with something in the 14-month range more typical. Ryu went under the knife last June 17.

The Florida Complex League is at the low end of the minor leagues and games are played in front of no fans.

Ryu is in the final year of a four-year, $80-million deal he signed with the Blue Jays before the 2020 season.

Ryu was Toronto’s opening-day starter in 2020 and ’21. The 36-year-old struggled badly in the second half of 2021 and pitched to a 5.67 ERA in six starts in 2022 before going for season-ending surgery.

Ryu is 75-45 with a 3.44 ERA in 175 career appearances (174 starts) for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Blue Jays.
