Blue Jays select Canadians O’Halloran, Shaw on Day 2 of MLB Draft

After selecting Arjun Nimmala with their lone pick on the first night of the 2023 MLB Draft, the Toronto Blue Jays added seven players on Day 2 of the event.

In the fifth and ninth rounds, the Blue Jays added a pair of Canadians, selecting University of Michigan pitcher and Mississauga, Ont. native Connor O’Halloran, 157th overall and Victoria, B.C. high school infielder Sam Shaw 274th.

Four additional Canadians were selected on Monday, joining O’Halloran, Shaw and the Oakland Athletics’ 39th-overall pick Myles Naylor — who was taken on the first day of the draft.

The Boston Red Sox selected Burlington, Ont.’s Matt Duffy 115th overall. Duffy is a right-handed pitcher from Canisius College in Buffalo.

Avery Owusu-Asiedu was the next Canadian off the board, going to the Philadelphia Phillies with the 283rd-overall pick. Owusu-Asiedu hails from Saskatoon, Sask. and attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

The next two players selected from north of the border went back-to-back, with White Rock, B.C.’s Matt Wilkinson going to the Cleveland Guardians 308th and Saint-Joseph-De-Bauce, Que.’s Pier Olivier Boucher going 309th to the Atlanta Braves.
