Blue Jays’ Bassitt says he’s OK after exiting start with back tightness

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt left Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox after bouncing a pitch to home plate then signalling into the dugout.

Toronto Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt exited Monday’s game against the Chicago White Sox with right lower back tightness in the seventh inning, but the right-hander said afterward that he doesn’t expect to miss a start.

“I’m good. I’m not concerned about … missing even a bullpen. I’m alright,” Bassitt said after a 5-2 win.

Bassitt said his right side was tight most of the game.

The starter bounced a pitch to the plate in the seventh inning and then motioned to the dugout for the trainer. Manager John Schneider also came out for the visit.

Zach Pop replaced Bassitt with the Blue Jays leading 4-2.

“I just erred on the side of caution a little bit and said ‘Alright, my time’s done'” Bassitt said.

Bassitt entered the game 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA in his first year with the Blue Jays.

After a nightmarish first start in which he gave up nine runs in 3.1 innings, Bassitt has looked far more comfortable.

Bassitt has gone at least six innings in each of his next four starts, never giving up more than two runs.

Bassitt signed a three-year, $63-million deal with the Blue Jays in the off-season.

Bassitt broke into the majors with the White Sox in 2014 and also has pitched for the Oakland A’s and New York Mets.
