Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. wins first Gold Glove award

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a superstar at the plate but now his play in the field is being recognized.

The Toronto Blue Jays slugger was chosen as the 2022 American League Gold Glove winner at first base. He is the first Blue Jays player to win a Gold Glove at that position.

The 23-year-old began his career at third base but transitioned to first in 2020 and has been a staple there ever since. This season he appeared in all but two Blue Jays games, including 128 at first.

“Turning yourself into a Gold Glove first baseman is something you should be very proud of,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said in a video message to Guerrero shared on the team’s Twitter account. “Very, very happy for you and hopefully it’s the first of many.”

Four of Guerrero’s teammates — Jose Berrios, Matt Chapman, Whit Merrifield and Jackie Bradley Jr. — were also named finalists for Gold Glove awards. Here is a complete list of the winners:
