Former Blue jays RHP Sergio Romo opts for free agency after clearing waivers

Former Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Sergio Romo has cleared outright waivers and opted for free agency, the club said on Wednesday.

Romo was designated for assignment on Saturday.

Signed to a one-year contract by Toronto on June 29, the 39-year-old Romo had a 4.91 ERA in 3.2 innings of relief with the club.

The Blue Jays signed Romo after he was released by the Seattle Mariners earlier this year.

A 15-year major-league veteran, Romo won three World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants.
