Good relief: Dominant scoreless outings sees Brewers’ Wilson join elite company

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Bryse Wilson now shares the spotlight with Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley after delivering six scoreless relief innings in a 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.

Wilson is the first pitcher to toss five or more shutout innings and earn the win in consecutive relief appearances since Eckersley achieved the feat for the Athletics in 1987.

The Brewers hurler came in to start the third frame when his team was trailing 1-0. He proceeded to strikeout four across six innings of work and exited ahead of the ninth when Elvis Peguero entered and earned the save.

The 26-year-old last pitched from the pen on June 15 against the Cincinnati Reds where he put up six strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings en route to another 3-1 victory.

Wilson, a former top-100 prospect, was traded to the Brewers for cash from the Pittsburgh Pirates in January of 2023. He has since found his groove with his new club, improving his ERA to 3.23 along with a 1.15 WHIP in his one-and-a-half seasons with Milwaukee. He previously had a 5.66 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP through his first six years since joining the majors as a 20-year-old.
