The San Diego Padres liked what they saw this season and are rewarding the man in charge.
Manager Mike Shildt has signed an extension to remain with the team through the 2027 season after leading the Padres back to the post-season, the team announced Wednesday.
Shildt, 56, helped the Padres to an unexpected 93-69 record in 2024, his first season as the bench boss. He had previously worked as a coach with the Padres from 2022 to 2023 before being promoted.
“As Mike demonstrated this year, he has an unwavering commitment to winning and a unique set of skills that got our group to perform at a high level,” Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said. “He possesses a true love for this team and the game of baseball, and I am thrilled to continue to work together with Mike to bring a championship to the City of San Diego.”
Their record last season was the best in franchise history since winning 98 games in 1998, when they made the World Series for the first and only time.
The Charlotte, N.C., native had previously worked as the manager for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2018-2021 and was voted NL Manager of the Year in 2019.
He has a 345-268 (.563) managerial record and guided the Cardinals to 17 consecutive wins in 2021, the longest streak in franchise history.
