After being selected to his first-ever All-Star team, Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm will be swinging for the fences in the 2024 Home Run Derby.
The 27-year-old was revealed as one of this year’s participants in the Derby on Friday ahead of the Phillies series with their NL East rival Atlanta Braves.
Bohm is slashing .296/.347/.488 with 11 home runs while leading MLB in doubles with 28 and pacing the National League with 70 RBIs.
Of Bohm’s 11 homers, seven have travelled over 400 feet.
The third-overall pick in the 2018 draft, Bohm has broken out in 2024, posting career bests across the board, earning him the starting spot at the hot corner for the National League.
While he has never participated in the MLB Home Run Derby, Bohm won the Coastal Plain League — a collegiate summer league located in the southeastern United States — Derby in 2016 as a member of the Wilmington Sharks.
The Athletic‘s Matt Gelb reported that Bohm will have the same pitcher, Scott Wingo, throw to him on the national that he did during that win eight years ago.
Bobby Abreu and Ryan Howard are the only two Phillies to have previously claimed the Derby crown, winning in back-to-back years (2005 and 2006).
Bohm becomes the second player to announce their intention to compete, joining Baltimore Orioles shortstop and fellow All-Star Gunnar Henderson in the 2024 event.
Some notable names have said they won’t participate, including reigning champ Vladimir Guerrero Jr., current MLB home run leader Aaron Judge and Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.
The 2024 Derby is set for Monday, July 15, starting at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
