Report: Canadian Dalton Pompey agrees to minor-league deal with Angels

Canadian outfielder Dalton Pompey has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Los Angeles Angels, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.

Pompey, 28, was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays in July of 2019 after nine years in the team’s system, including 64 major league games. The Mississauga, Ont., native attended spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2020, but was released before the season.

It’s unclear which level of the minor leagues Pompey will begin at, but he will be reuniting with Perry Minasian, the former Blue Jays assistant general manager who is in his first season as GM of the Angels.

Pompey’s tenure with the Blue Jays was rocky. Coming up as one of the top outfield prospects in baseball, he won over Blue Jays fans during the 2015 playoffs with some clutch base running. However, injuries — including multiple concussions — prevented Pompey from ever securing a full-time spot in the lineup and he only appeared in 13 major league games after the 2015 season.
