Report: Chicago White Sox plan to hire Will Venable as manager

After setting a Modern Era MLB record with 121 losses, the Chicago White Sox will have a new manager leading the way in 2025.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the White Sox plan to hire Texas Rangers coach Will Venable as the franchise’s next manager.

Venable, who turned 42 on Tuesday, has been the Rangers’ associate manager for the past two seasons, helping the team to a World Series title in 2023.

The former big league outfielder shifted to coaching in 2017, serving as a special assistant to Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein. From there, he was a base coach with the Cubs for three seasons before being hired as the Boston Red Sox bench coach in 2020.

A nine-year MLB veteran, Venable played in 967 games, spending time with the Rangers, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.

His best season came in 2013 when he posted a .796 OPS and hit 22 home runs for San Diego.

The White Sox were in search of a new skipper after dismissing Pedro Grifol on Aug. 8. Grady Sizemore was the interim manager in Chicago over the final two months of the season.

According to MLB.com’s Scott Merkin, Sizemore was one of the candidates in consideration for the job, but ultimately White Sox general manager Chris Getz chose Venable.
