Stroman returns to rotation as Yankees place Cortes on 15-day injured list

Right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman is back in the New York Yankees rotation and gets the start Wednesday night for a key matchup against the Baltimore Orioles.

Stroman replaces scheduled starter Nestor Cortes, who was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday, due to a left elbow flexor strain.

The 33-year-old Stroman was moved to the bullpen last week and earned his second career save during Tuesday’s win over the Seattle Mariners. He allowed one run, five hits, zero walks and struck out three over three innings of work.

Stroman, who signed a two-year deal with the Yankees ahead of the season, holds a 10-8 record and 4.07 ERA over 28 starts.

The Yankees (92-65) are looking to clinch the AL East crown with a win over their division rivals.

The Orioles (87-70) won the first game of the three-game series 5-3 Tuesday.

New York also recalled right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet from triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
