Two-time all-star Elvis Andrus to retire with Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers announced Wednesday that former shortstop Elvis Andrus will retire as a member of the team.

A press conference will be held ahead of Friday’s home game against the Los Angeles Angels. Andrus will also participate in the ceremonial first pitch with former teammate Michael Young, who now works for the Rangers as a special assistant to the general manager.

Angels manager Ron Washington, who managed the Rangers during Andrus’ first six MLB seasons, will also be in attendance at the press conference.

Andrus made his major-league debut with the Rangers in 2009 and finished runner-up to Andrew Bailey of the Oakland Athletics for the AL rookie of the year award.

The Maracay, Venezuela, native spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Rangers and was an all-star in 2010 and 2012.

Andrus was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2021 and spent the past two years with the Chicago White Sox after signing as a free agent.

He signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks in March but was released after missing the cut for the opening day roster.

The 36-year-old hit .269 with 2,091 hits, 102 home runs, 775 RBIs and 347 stolen bases during his 15-year career.
