Lorenzo Insigne's unceremonious time in Toronto appears to be nearing an end.
Toronto FC is working toward a split with the Italian forward ahead of the 2025 season, Tom Bogert of GiveMeSport reported on Sunday.
According to Bogert, the departure isn't set in stone yet, but both sides are motivated to split before the start of the season. The transfer window in Europe and the Middle East is open, meaning the attacker could be sold to a team across the pond.
Additionally, if no sale takes shape, the team could choose to buy out the remainder of his contract, which is set to run through the summer of 2026. Insigne penned a four-year deal worth $15.4 million annually in 2022.
His annual salary is second-most in MLS behind only Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, worth $20.4 million per year.
Insigne's signing marked a summer of spending for Toronto FC, who also put pen to paper on fellow Italian Federico Bernardeschi.
Since moving to Toronto on a free transfer in 2022, the former Napoli star has yet to produce at the level his salary might suggest, tallying 18 goals and 13 assists in 63 games between all competitions in North America. He did not pick up a goal contribution in his final five games with the outfit and went goalless in his final 13 appearances.
Along with his scoring droughts, the 33-year-old has also missed 26 MLS regular season games with a variety of lower-body injuries since 2022. Additionally, according to a report from The Athletic, Insigne had multiple disagreements with former head coach Bob Bradley and interim coach Terry Dunfield.
His and Bernardeschi's struggles in North America coincided with a string of poor finishes for TFC, with the club ending 2022 in 27th place, 2023 in 29th and 2024 in 22nd place — the latter good for 11th in the Eastern Conference and outside the playoff picture.
Pre-season training camp is set to begin for a handful of sides next week, with the rest of the clubs set to report the following week. Toronto FC kicks off their season with a game against D.C. United on Feb. 22.
