The Vancouver Whitecaps have returned to the Tartan Army to bolster its midfield.
On Tuesday, the team announced the signing of 32-year-old Stuart Armstrong to a Major League Soccer Designated Player contract through 2026.
Armstrong played the past six seasons with Southampton FC, including five seasons in the Premier League. The Inverness, Scotland native started 143 of his 214 appearances across all competitions for the Saints, scoring 25 goals and tallying 19 assists.
“He is a player who has excelled for many years at the highest levels in the United Kingdom, as well as internationally with Scotland. He brings experience, tactical awareness, positional flexibility, and a very high work rate,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director in a statement. “In addition, his passing range and elite chance creation from the midfield position will add another dimension to our team’s overall attack.”
For Scotland, Armstrong has made 51 appearances and played in Euro 2024, where his side failed to make it out of the group stage.
He joins fellow Scotsman and skipper Ryan Gauld in midfield.
