Alexander Gustafsson will join fellow light-heavyweight star Jon Jones on the cover of the anticipated EA SPORTS UFC video game.
EA SPORTS made the announcement Friday.
“It’s a thrill and an honour to appear on the cover of the first ever EA SPORTS UFC game,” Gustafsson said in a statement on the UFC’s website. “I want to thank all my fans who tirelessly campaigned and voted for me. I am proud to have the support of not only my home country, Sweden, and Europe, but also from people all around the globe. This is a huge win that motivates me to become the best light heavy weight fighter in the world.”
It’s somewhat fitting Gustafsson is on the cover with Jones, seeing as the two 205-pounders engaged in an epic five-round title fight in the main event of UFC 165 in Toronto in September.
Gustafsson beat out the likes of current champions Ronda Rousey, Jose Aldo, Anthony Pettis, Chris Weidman, Demetrious Johnson, plus stars such as Chael Sonnen, Miesha Tate and former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre in a 16-fighter tournament where fans voted on who advanced to the next round.
“This was a great way to engage fans and we are excited that they selected Alexander Gustafsson as the cover vote winner,” UFC president Dana White said. “Europe accounted for nearly 40 percent of the web traffic to the cover vote during the last week of voting. This overwhelming support from UFC fans in Europe is indicative of the sport’s rapidly growing popularity around the world.”
EA SPORTS UFC is scheduled to be released in the spring.
