London, Ont.’s Jesse Ronson is set to meet Francisco Trinaldo in a lightweight bout at UFC Fight Night 36 in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil on Feb. 15, UFC officials announced Thursday.
Ronson (13-3) was unsuccessful in his UFC debut in September as he dropped a split decision to Michel Prazeres at UFC 165 in Toronto in a bout the Canadian took on short notice. Ronson trains with UFC lightweight Sam Stout and retired featherweight Mark Hominick at the Adrenaline Training Center in London.
The 27-year-old is nicknamed “The Body Snatcher” due to devastating body punches he’s able to land consistently on his opponents. A veteran of the defunct Score Fighting Series, Ronson holds wins over the likes of WEC veteran Ryan Healy, plus rising Canadian stars Alex Ricci and Jason Saggo.
Trinaldo (13-3) is also looking to bounce back from a September loss. The Brazilian, who is massive for a 155-pounder, was submitted by Piotr Hallmann at UFC Fight Night 28 after dominating that bout early. The loss was especially surprising considering Trinaldo was a three-to-one favourite and fighting in his home country. The 35-year-old is a veteran of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil and is regarded as one of the strongest fighters in the division.
Oliveira vs. Ogle on tap
A featherweight bout between Charles Oliveira and Andy Ogle will also take place at UFC Fight Night 36.
Oliveira (16-4) is on the first two-fight losing streak of his career and coming off an impressive performance in a losing effort against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 162. Meanwhile, Ogle (9-3) looks to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Cole Miller in October.
The event is scheduled to be headlined by a middleweight bout between contenders Lyoto Machida and Gegard Mousasi.
