83 days to Sochi: The mountain venues

High above the palm trees and beaches of Sochi’s city centre are where you’ll find most of Canada’s medal hopes (Jeff McIntosh/CP)

As we’ve covered, events at Sochi will be split amongst two regions—the “Coastal” and “Mountain” clusters. The Coastal area boasts the 75,000-person capacity Fischt Olympic Stadium, as well as other indoor venues like the Bolshoy and Shayba hockey rinks.

But it’s on the mountain where a ton of Canada’s best medal hopes will be found across sports like skiing, slopestyle and bobsleigh. So without further ado, here’s a breakdown of the mountain event venues in Sochi:

Laura Sports Complex
Named for the Laura river and boasting a combined capacity of 15,000 for both sports. This is where you’ll find biathlon and cross-country skiing. And for those asking: Yes, the new relay biathlon event will take place here.

Rosa Khutor Alpine Centre
The existing ski hills here, the peak roughly 2,500 meters above water, have been upgraded and improved to meet Olympic alpine skiing standards.

Rosa Khutor Extreme Park
This is the rock and roll area where Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing happen. On the West side of the Rosa Khutor area, the park is split into two zones: the ‘HAM’ (Halfpipe, Aerials, and Moguls) and ‘PSX’ (Parallel, Slopestyle, and Cross). After the Games this will become an official Russian training centre.

Sanki Sliding Centre

Boasting new safety measures for the athletes, the track is 1.8km long with 314 metres of braking area. Sliders can reach top speeds around 135 km/hr. Expect Canadian contenders here in bobsleigh, skeleton and luge

RusSki Gorki Jumping Centre

The future home of the Russian national ski-jump and Nordic combined teams, fans can catch the very first Olympic appearance of women’s ski-jump here.
