After Vanderbilt’s season was cut short, when its upcoming game against Georgia was declared a no-contest, kicker Sarah Fuller took a moment to thank the team as her “time as a football player” ends.
The Dec. 19 game was cancelled due to the size of Vanderbilt’s football team and position availability falling below minimum roster requirements, the SEC announced Monday. Vanderbilt was navigating a COVID-19 outbreak from its previous two games, which saw Fuller, the school’s keeper for its women’s soccer team, take the field as the first woman to appear for a Power 5 football team.

“I would like to personally thank the entire Vanderbilt football team, coaches and support staff for this amazing opportunity to be a part of this program,” Fuller wrote in a statement on Twitter. “I was accepted as an athlete and a true member of this team.”
Fuller made history again last Saturday as the first woman to score a point in a Power 5 game, kicking two extra points in Vanderbilt’s 42-17 loss against Tennessee.

“This is an experience that I will never forget and will cherish forever,” Fuller wrote.
The Commodores finished the season with an 0-9 record. After Fuller’s debut, Derek Mason — who reached out to the soccer team for reinforcements when the COVID-19 outbreak began — was relieved of his head coaching duties. On Monday, Vanderbilt announced that Clark Lea, the current defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, would become the program’s 29th head coach.
As a senior, Fuller has one semester left in her Vanderbilt education, which means she’s unlikely to be back on the football field with the Commodores.
“Good luck to the seniors and staff who are moving on to new adventures,” she wrote. “My best wishes to the team as this program moves forward and continues to grow.”
