AIGLE, Switzerland — Tour de France winner Cadel Evans of Australia has climbed atop the International Cycling Union’s official world rankings.
Evans used his victory in cycling’s greatest race Sunday to rise from fourth to first in the season-long standings.
Alberto Contador, who won the Giro d’Italia in May but finished fifth in the Tour, remains in second place.
The Spanish rider could lose his victories in the Giro and 2010 Tour when the Court of Arbitration for Sport rules on his positive test for clenbuterol one year ago. A three-day CAS hearing opens next Monday.
Philippe Gilbert of Belgium is third in the rankings. He led for much of the season following his domination of the one-day spring classicis.
Victoria’s Ryder Hesjedal moved up 14 places to 78th overall in the ranking after finishing 18th at the Tour.
