The banned substance that former world 100m champion Tyson Gay tested for last month is an anabolic steroid, according to a report.

According to extracts from a letter that the BBC has obtained, the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) notified Gay of the origin of the substance found in his body following a test from the recent U.S. World Championship trials.

Within the July 23 letter, USADA states to Gay that: “Using the Carbon Isotope Ratio Analysis it reported that the sample had an adverse analytical finding reflecting values that are consistent with the administration of a steroid of exogenous (external) nature.”

Under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code, the regulatory suspension for taking a banned steroid is two years, which is the maximum sentence an athlete found guilty of the offence can be given.

The 31-year-old Gay would be eligible to return from the ban in time for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
