TORONTO — The Brampton Thunder made defenceman Sarah Edney the first overall pick in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League draft Sunday.
The 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., was a conference all-star in her final season at Harvard, which lost 4-1 to Minnesota in the NCAA women’s championship game. She helped the Canadian under-22 women’s team win gold at the Nations Cup in Fussen, Germany in January.
The Toronto Furies made left-winger Emily Fulton of Stratford, Ont., the No. 2 pick in the draft. Fulton posted a career high 48 points in 31 games to cap her collegiate career with the Cornell Big Red this past season.
The Montreal Stars chose Canadian women’s hockey team captain Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Que., third overall.
Poulin, who played her final season for Boston University last year, scored the gold-medal winning goals for Canada at both the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
The Calgary Inferno took centre Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ont., with the fourth pick. Jenner also finished her college career with Cornell and was an assistant captain for Canada at this year’s world women’s championship.
The Boston Blades won the Clarkson Cup that goes to the CWHL champion. The defending champions chose American centre Kristina Brown fifth overall.
The five-team league kicks off the 2015-16 season Oct. 17 with the Toronto Furies at home to the Blades and the Montreal Stars hosting the Brampton Thunder.
