Dwyane Wade says he had cancerous tumour removed from kidney

Hall of Fame basketball player Dwyane Wade has opened up about a health scare he had back in 2023.

In the latest episode of his podcast "The Why with Dwyane Wade" which was published Thursday, Wade revealed that he had surgery to remove a tumour from his kidney in December of 2023.

Wade said doctors removed 40 per cent of his right kidney and tests later revealed that the tumour was cancerous.

The Hall of Famer said that he found out about the tumour after he was dealing with some stomach and urinary issues and went to see a doctor. He underwent a full-body scan which revealed the tumour, at which point multiple doctors recommended the surgery.

"Thank God that I did do the surgery," Wade said.

On his podcast, Wade also opened up about how difficult his journey through the health scare was.

"I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak," he said. "That moment was probably the weakest point I've ever felt in my life. ... I was struggling, dog. Struggling. And one thing you never want to do as a man is you never want your family to see you as weak. You don't want to be perceived as weak and you don't want to be seen in your weak moments. But I had to."

But he said in the end, the journey showed him the true meaning of family.

"What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree," Wade said. "I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me and in that process. In my weakness, I found strength in my family.”

Wade was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023 and is the Miami Heat's all-time leading scorer. He and Udonis Haslem are also the only players to have been on all three Heat teams that won NBA championships.

The 34-year-old NBA legend is now a part-owner of the Utah Jazz and WNBA's Chicago Sky in addition to having many other business interests.
