Kyrie Irving hoping to play for Australia at 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles

Kyrie Irving already has one Olympic gold medal to his name as a member of the U.S., but in 2028, he wants to try and win another one with a different country.

Irving, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, told reporters at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday that he's hoping to play for Team Australia at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

"We're in the process of that right now," Irving told reporters. "Just trying to figure out what's going to be the best route for me to be eligible. There's a lot of paperwork in between that."

The Dallas Mavericks star guard won gold with the U.S. at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, but was not selected for the last two American Olympic squads.

ESPN reported that in order for Iriving to represent the Boomers, he will have to gain approval from USA Basketball, FIBA and Basketball Australia.

"Obviously, Team USA still has a decision to make," Irving said. "But for me, I'm just trying to do what's best. Honestly, if I can be an Aussie at one point in my career and play for the Australian team, that would be great."

The Australians won bronze at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and finished sixth at the Paris Games in 2024. The U.S. won gold in both 2020 and 2024.

Iriving, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft, would be 36 at the Los Angeles Olympics.

In 44 games with the Mavericks this season, Irving is averaging 24.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists.
