New York Knicks guard RJ Barrett is close to signing a four-year rookie extension that could be worth up to $120 million, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
The 22-year-old Barrett, from Mississauga, Ont., becomes the youngest player in Knicks history to earn a $100-million deal.
Wojnarowski says the deal will end weeks of speculation regarding the Knicks' interest in Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz.
Wojnarowski said the team set a Monday night deadline to reach an agreement on a deal for Mitchell. If an agreement was not reached, the Knicks were set to finalize the Barrett extension.
Barrett is the first Knicks first-round pick to sign a multi-year extension with the franchise since Charlie Ward in 1994.
Barrett averaged a career-high 20 points to go along with 5.8 rebounds and three assists last season, his third in the NBA.
The Knicks picked the Duke product third overall in the 2019 draft.
Barrett also is a key part of the Canadian national men's senior team as it tries to qualify for the 2023 FIBA World Cup and 2024 Olympics.
