The Hornets could be taking an unorthodox approach to their next head coach hire.
Charlotte is set to interview 15-year NBA veteran and ESPN analyst JJ Redick for their vacant head coaching position, the Athletic's Shams Charania reported on Monday.
The former Duke star retired in 2021 and has since done work as an analyst for ESPN, providing commentary for games and showing up on shows. He also hosts a well-renowned podcast The Old Man and the Three and has recently started a new show that he co-hosts with NBA superstar LeBron James.
Redick, 39, was a solid player in the NBA, establishing himself as a 3-point specialist and leading the league in 3-point percentage in the 2015-16 season, hitting 47.5 per cent of his shots from deep.
He played for six different teams over the course of his decade and a half in the league, highlighted by his seven years with the Orlando Magic and four with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Redick has had his name pop up in head coach hiring cycles before, as the former guard was reportedly interviewed by the Toronto Raptors during their coaching search last off-season, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported.
Charlotte is in the midst of a coaching search after incumbent Steve Clifford stepped down from the role at the end of the season. He ended his tenure as the franchise's winningest head coach.
They ended the season with a 21-61 record, good for 13th in the Eastern Conference. They'll head to the NBA Draft Lottery with the third-best odds at the first-overall pick.
