Forward Harrison Barnes has agreed on a three-year, $54 million contract extension with the Sacramento Kings before the start of free agency, according to ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski.
The 31-year-old has been with the Kings squad for the past five seasons. Barnes has performed well as a three-point shooter and wing scorer over the years as the franchise evolved from a poor team during his initial days to a contender this season.
The Kings had a solid 2022-23 regular season, finishing third in the loaded Western Conference with a 48-34 win-loss record to make the postseason for the first time since 2006, breaking the longest playoff drought in major North American sports.
While De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis were the main stars, Barnes did his job as a member of the supporting cast admirably, averaging 15.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 three-pointers made per game on 47 per cent shooting.
The Kings were eventually ousted in the first round of the playoffs by the Golden State Warriors in an exhilarating series that went all seven games.
Barnes has been a valuable contributor ever since being picked by the Warriors in the 2012 NBA draft, even helping Golden State win a championship at the beginning of their dynastic run in 2015.
He was then signed by the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, and enjoyed the most productive seasons of his career, averaging a career-high 19.2 points per game in 2016-17 and 18.9 points per game the next year.
