LeBron James thought he was going to get to enjoy a nice, relaxing dinner in New York on Saturday night.
Turns out the Los Angeles Lakers had another idea in mind.
ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that James learned of the late-night blockbuster deal between the Lakers and Dallas Mavericks while he was out for a bite with his family after his team's win over the New York Knicks.
McMenamin says James was surprised by the move and had no clue a deal was being worked on.
The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick. ESPN's Shams Charania was the first to report the deal shortly after midnight Sunday.
The three-team deal also involved the Utah Jazz, who will receive Jalen Hood-Schifino from the Lakers and two second-round picks.
The combination of James and Doncic will be must-see TV for basketball fans.
In his rookie 2018-19 season, Doncic said James was his favourite player growing up and called him his idol.
