Sportsnet's Michael Grange confirmed a report that the Toronto Raptors offered guard Fred VanVleet a 4-year, $114 million extension prior to the start of the 2022-23 season.
The offer, first reported by TSN's Josh Lewenberg, was not rejected by VanVleet, but instead, there was a "mutual decision to wait, with no deadline discussed."
VanVleet signed a four-year, $85-million contract with Toronto in the 2020 offseason.
According to the report, the extension offer was the maximum amount the Raptors could have offered the undrafted guard.
News of the possible extension comes at a curious time for Raptors, as they are in the midst of one of the worst slides they have had over the past few seasons. They are 3-7 in their past 10 games, and currently have a 16-23 record which is the sixth worst in the NBA.
VanVleet has been the centre of many of the discussions around the struggling team and where they should go from here. An all-star last season, VanVleet has had his struggles this year, averaging 18.8 points per game on 37.7 per cent shooting from the field. He has especially struggled from beyond the arc, where his 32.5 per cent success from three is a new career low.
It comes as no shock to anyone that the Raptors will have a lot of big decisions to make prior to the Feb. 9 NBA tradeline, and one of the key dominoes will be what they decide to do with their starting point guard.
