The Houston Rockets have shut down star guard John Wall for the rest of the season due to a hamstring tweak, according to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania.
Wall appeared in 40 games this season for the Rockets, his first with Houston after being acquired in the blockbuster trade that sent Russell Westbrook to the Washington Wizards.
The Rockets had been cautious with Wall’s health throughout the year, often sitting him for at least one game in back-to-back situations and placing him on minutes restrictions as he dealt with a variety of relatively minor ailments.
This hamstring issue does not mark the first time Wall’s season has been cut short by injury in recent years.
In 2019, while still a member of the Wizards, Wall underwent season-ending surgery on his left heel, and later developed an infection in the incision from that surgery. While sidelined, Wall ruptured his left Achilles tendon when he slipped and fell in his home. He was ruled out for 12 months.
With the Rockets this year, who sit dead-last in the NBA with a 15-46 record, Wall was putting together an impressive return from the debilitating string of injuries. Before being shut down, Wall averaged 20.6 points on 40.4 per cent shooting, 6.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game.
