After one season behind San Antonio’s bench, Spurs legend Tim Duncan is reportedly stepping away from full-time coaching, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.
San Antonio ended the 2019-20 season with a 32-39 record, the franchise’s worst in over two decades.
Duncan spent the year as one of head coach Gregg Popovich’s assistants. In March, he was credited with a win when he filled in as head coach for a game against the Charlotte Hornets.
The 44-year-old soon-to-be Hall of Famer did not accompany the Spurs to the NBA bubble in Orlando, Fla., instead staying behind to help oversee LaMarcus Aldridge’s recovery from shoulder surgery.
San Antonio’s belief, according to Stein’s reporting, was that Duncan’s coaching stint was always going to be one year, and that he is now expected to return to his previous organizational role in which he provided player development assistance to the team.
