Dennis Schroder appears Bay area bound.
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly finalizing a deal to acquire the veteran guard in exchange for De'Anthony Melton and three second-round picks, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
The deal cannot be made official until Sunday when Melton's trade restriction gets lifted.
Schroeder, 31, was traded to Brooklyn from Toronto at last year's trade deadline after signing a two-year, $25-million deal with the Raptors in the 2023 off-season.
And in his first full season with the Nets, the German guard has been a steadying presence for the relatively young squad. Schroder has averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists, 18th in the NBA, while shooting 38.7 per cent from beyond the arc through 23 games.
The former 17th overall pick in the 2013 Draft has helped Brooklyn get out to a 10-15 start, well above the expectations of most entering the year. He led the Nets in minutes and assists while ranking third in scoring.
Schroder should be an immediate contributor for the Warriors whether he's starting alongside Stephen Curry or leading the second unit. He'll likely help improve Golden State's middling offence that ranks 18th in the NBA. It's been their stellar defence, fourth in the league, that's led the Warriors to a 14-10 record and fifth in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, for Brooklyn, it's a cap-clearing move. By all accounts, they appear to be a team focused on acquiring assets for a rebuild rather than making a run for a Play-In spot. Melton — who underwent season-ending knee surgery last week after tearing his left ACL in November — is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this year. Melton's expiring contract, plus three second-round picks, is a decent haul for a player that wasn't a part of Brooklyn's long-term plans.
NBA insider Jake Fischer also reported that the Warriors and Nets were in talks involving not only Schroder but also Brooklyn forward Cam Johnson before landing on just the guard. Fischer later added that two-way Reece Beekman would likely be heading to the Nets as part of the deal as well.
Golden State will become Schroder's eighth team in 12 NBA seasons. He had stints with Atlanta, Oklahoma City, the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston, Toronto and Houston before joining the Nets. He also helped lead Germany to the 2023 Basketball World Cup title.
The Warriors return to action on Sunday as they host the Dallas Mavericks, while the Nets welcome the East-leading Cleveland Cavaliers to Brooklyn on Monday.
