Toronto Raptors rookie Scottie Barnes is teaming up with Skilled Trades College of Canada (STC) to launch a scholarship named the "Scottie Barnes Scholarship" for BIPOC students across Canada.
"Traditional university is great, but also not a one-size-fits-all solution for every student," said Barnes. "I'm excited to team with STC to raise awareness about benefits of trade schools, and also make a community impact by delivering a scholarship that offers an opportunity to students who might have faced bias or not had the same chances as others."
The Scottie Barnes Scholarship will allow students to become an apprentice in their trade of choice, as well as cover their tuition and all learning materials the students will need such as tools and textbooks. Barnes and STC plan to award four scholarships for each of the next three years.
"We are excited to work with Scottie to shine a light on the skilled trades as a first-choice career option for young people, and a viable second career option for those who have been impacted by the pandemic," said Mike Di Donato, Director of STC.
The Skilled Trades College of Canada currently has five campuses in the Greater Toronto Area, offering a 12-week training program for skilled trades including electrical, plumbing, and home renovation.
Toronto Raptors' rookie sensation Scottie Barnes has proven himself to be a very influential player on the court this season, becoming a serious contender for the NBA Rookie of the Year award. His athleticism and physical play style have helped the Raptors to the seventh-seed in the Eastern Conference and now, he is looking to have just as big of an influence off the court in the city of Toronto.
