It's been far from picturesque for Scoot Henderson in his rookie season, and his struggles were punctuated in a blowout loss to the Miami Heat on Friday with the guard finishing with the worst plus-minus in NBA history at minus-58.
The Portland Trail Blazers suffered a historic routing at the hands of the Heat, losing 142-82. That 60-point gap was the eighth-biggest margin of victory in NBA history.
But perhaps more embarrassing for Portland is that it was only the second-biggest margin this season, with the young Trail Blazers losing 139-77 to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Jan. 11, earlier this year.
Henderson was the centre of attention in that game too, finishing with a minus-56, which before tonight was good for the second-worst plus-minus in NBA history behind only Manny Harris of the Cleveland Cavaliers in a 2011 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Pinning the loss on the rookie would be shortsighted though, as the twitchy guard finished with a team-leading 20 points while notching six rebounds and six assists.
However, he won't want this pattern to keep up as he progresses through his NBA career. He already stands as the only player in the history of the league to have two games with a plus-minus of minus-56 or worse.
The third-overall pick from the 2023 NBA Draft is currently averaging 13.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists for the struggling Trail Blazers. He has a minus-422 total plus-minus this season, good for sixth-worst in the league.
Portland, meanwhile, sits at 19-54 on the season, good for the fifth-worst record in the NBA.
